Instructions

1. Decide on the type of tile you want to use for your steps. Many types of tile are not recommended for stairs because they increase the chance of slipping. Ask your local home improvement store or tile shop about the best tile for your steps. In addition, you need to decide if you want to use an anti-slip nosing that is made of rubber and helps prevent falls on tile stairs.

2. Prepare the subfloor. With pliers and a hammer, remove any carpeting tack strips, glue or staples that may be left on the stairs. Vacuum the steps thoroughly.

3. Measure the stairs with a measuring tape. Transfer the measurements to a sheet of cementum backer board. Cut the angel board to fit the stairs. Apply each piece of the angel board to the steps with construction adhesive and 2 inch screws. When you are finished, each of the stair risers and step treads should have cementum angel board attached to them.

4. If you ar using anti-slip rubber nosing, install the nosing according to the manufacturer directions.

5. Mix the thin set mortar using the directions provided on the mortar packaging. Lay the mortar on the top stair tread using a notched trowel. Apply the howitzer astatine a 45 degree angle with the notched trowel. Work you way down the stairs so you do non need to stand on the newly applied tiles.

6. Press the tile on the thin set that was applied to the bottom riser. Use as many whole tiles as possible. If the tiles need to be cut in order to fit, use a tile saw. Remember to space the tiles for grout joints using tile spacers. Read More
